The long-awaited, definitive biography of The King of Soul, timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Redding's iconic performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival.

Otis Redding remains an immortal presence in the canon of American music on the strength of such classic hits as “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” and “Respect,” a song he wrote and recorded before Aretha Franklin made it her own. As the architect of the distinctly southern, gospel-inflected style of rhythm & blues associated with Stax Records in Memphis, Redding made music that has long served as the gold standard of 1960s soul. Yet an aura of myth and mystery has always surrounded his life, which was tragically cut short at the height of his career by a plane crash in December 1967.

In Otis Redding: An Unfinished Life, Jonathan Gould finally does justice to Redding’s incomparable musical artistry, drawing on exhaustive research, the cooperation of the Redding family, and previously unavailable sources of information to present the first comprehensive portrait of the singer’s background, his upbringing, and his professional career.

In chronicling the story of Redding’s life and music, Gould also presents a social history of the time and place from which they emerged.  His book never lets us forget that the boundaries between black and white in popular music were becoming porous during the years when racial tensions were reaching a height throughout the United States. His indelible portrait of Redding and the mass acceptance of soul music in the 1960s is both a revealing look at a brilliant artist and a provocative exploration of the tangled history of race and music in America that resonates strongly with the present day.

Jesse Jackson once said of Martin Luther King, Jr., “Thinking about him is like thinking about the prism, the sun shining through a glass from as many angles as you look. You know there is another set of rays, and as many angles as you think about Dr. King, there is yet another set of angles with which to analyze him.” Author and depth psychologist Jennifer Leigh Selig approaches King from the angle of a cultural therapist, a radical conceit that extends therapy beyond the bounded container of the consulting room and into the cultural milieu, and beyond the narrow purview of the licensed few and into the hands of the committed many. During the Civil Rights Movement, Selig illustrates how King put America on the couch, talked with her about her issues, challenged her to see her psychological dis-ease, and marched with her along the path of healing, toward her own integration. And just as common wisdom says that therapists can only take clients as far toward wholeness as they have traveled themselves, it is illuminating to look at King’s psychological health for hints about why he was able to succeed, and where he might have failed, to heal his “client,” the soul of America. Drawing upon the mythic roles that possessed King—the deliverer, the prophet, and the martyr-savior—and the mythic goal that obsessed him—the creation of the beloved community—this book is a fascinating and ground-breaking exploration of the psyche and mythos of one man and his country struggling toward integration.

Brought up in a strict fundamentalist household, Evangeline Thiessen, like many Christians, found herself at odds with complex dogma that kept her from a lucid understanding of her relationship with God. It was the death of her father, himself a former minister, that finally brought her troubling spiritual disconnect into sharp focus and set her on a path that would afford her a new understanding of her own faith. Stepping away from the petrified state of twenty-first century fundamentalist Christian thought, she decided to re-examine the Greco-Judeo-Christian roots from which modern Christianity has grown. What she found was that a great deal of what informs the many far flung Christian denominations has very little basis in the gospel of Christ. These other influences can, however, be explained and even understood if one is willing to look at the broader contexts from which they arose. The tone and message of the remarkable spiritual conversation started by Jesus has been shifted and stifled over the centuries, but for those willing to listen it can still be discerned. The Unfinished Conversation is at once erudite and readable. It is an invitation for Christians to reconnect with the still-vital core of faith voiced two thousand years ago.

Five hundred years ago, a Catholic monk nailed a list of grievances on the door of a church in Germany and launched a revolution in the history of Christianity. Today there continues to be a number of unresolved issues between the Protestant and Catholic churches, and many experience this ongoing division within their family and among friends and neighbors. Written in an accessible and informative style, Gregg Allison and Chris Castaldo provide a brief and clear guide to the key points of unity and divergence between Protestants and Catholics today. They write to encourage fruitful conversation about the key theological and sociological differences between the two largest branches of Christianity. From the revolutionary events 500 years ago that sparked the Reformation to today, Unfinished Reformation takes a nuanced and thoughtful look at doctrine, practice, and how Protestants and Catholics can have fruitful discussions about the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Unfinished Drama of Scripture is a fresh retelling of the biblical narrative as a sprawling yet cohesive six-act play, in which disciples of Christ still play significant roles today. The author asserts that theological misunderstandings occur when we do not recognize which "act" we are living in, and therefore misconstrue God's intentions and lose our identity and mission. He contrasts competing religious and philosophical worldviews with the True Story of the world as found in the Bible, and clearly outlines the scriptural trajectory from Creation, the Fall, Israel's calling, Jesus, the Church and the New Creation. Through careful study from Genesis through Revelation, this is a call to grasp and live out the divine purposed that God always intended and to better know the God of the drama who pursues us with astonishing perseverance. Jim Reynolds holds a bachelor's and a master of divinity degree from Abilene Christian University (1964,1967), a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, Calif. (1974), and a law degree from Southern Methodist University (1981). He has ben a licensed marriage and family counselor, and has published numerous articles and books, including Secrets of Eden, God and Human Sexuality (1974), The Lepers Among Us (2007), The Lavish Hospitality of God (2009), and Why We Don't' Shoot the Wounded (2010). Jim has taught religion, theology, philosophy, and biblical studies at Pepperdine University and the University of Texas, and presently is an adjunct professor at Dallas Christian College. From 1981 to 2007, Jim was a family lawyer and partner with the Whitaker Chalk law firm in Fort Worth Texas. Since 1984 he has been pastor of Lake Highlands Church in Dallas, Texas.
